Russia passes 100-million-ton harvest milestone amid mounting Black Sea export bottlenecks

Russia’s ongoing grain harvest surpassed 100.5 million tons in late August 2026, up 12.5% year-on-year, driven by strong yields across key growing regions. However, escalating security tensions in the Azov-Black Sea basin and Ukraine-related shipping disruptions are creating severe logistics bottlenecks, preventing high production volumes from translating smoothly into global market supply.

The Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation has confirmed that national cereal production crossed the 100-million-ton threshold as of late August 2026, with average yields rising 4.3% year-on-year to 3.6 tons per hectare. While the expanding volume fully covers domestic food and animal feed requirements, export channels face significant friction.

BLACK SEA SHIPPING FRICTION DELAYS EXPORT FLOW

Strikes on port infrastructure and navigation restrictions in the Azov-Black Sea region, the primary gateway for Russian seaborne grain, have temporarily paralyzed major export terminals. Consequently, Russian authorities are evaluating the temporary removal of grain export duties until the end of the year to offset rising freight, insurance, and rerouting costs.

The widening gap between bumper field yields and physical shipping capacity is reshaping Black Sea trade dynamics. Ukrainian grain corridors continue to operate under heightened geopolitical volatility, while Russian exporters attempt to shift partial volumes toward Baltic ports with limited alternative capacity. For international compound feed manufacturers and grain buyers across the Middle East and North Africa, the Black Sea logjam introduces price uncertainty and potential delivery delays, despite abundant physical grain availability in the region.
