Turkey reduces customs duty on corn imports to 5%

A Presidential Decree published in Turkey’s Official Gazette today allows the import of 1 million tons of corn at a 5% customs duty until the end of the year. This decision addresses the Turkish feed industry’s recent call for lower import duties.

Following the feed industry's call for a reduction in customs duties on corn due to rising costs, the Presidency took action. The decree, signed by President Erdogan, introduced a tariff quota for corn imports. According to the regulation published in today’s Official Gazette, a 5% customs duty will apply to corn imports until December 31, 2024, with the decision covering up to 1 million tons.

The Turkish Feed Manufacturers' Association (TÜRKİYEM-BİR) had recently requested a reduction in corn import duties, citing that prices had surged to 9,500 TRY per ton (278 USD). TÜRKİYEM-BİR President M. Ülkü Karakuş, in an open letter addressed to the Directorate General of Imports of the Ministry of Trade, had stated, “To ensure the stable pricing of corn and other feed ingredients and prevent further increases in feed and food prices, it is necessary to reduce corn customs duties to 10-15%.”
