World Sunflower Seed and Sunflower Meal Market

According to data of US Department of Agriculture Foreign Agricultural Service (USDA FAS); world sunflower seed production, which was 39,4 million tons in 2014/15 season, reached to 40,4 million tons in 2015/16 season and it is estimated that it increased to 44,8 million tons in 2016/17 season.

Sunflower, a genus of plants comprising about 70 species in the family Asteraceae, Due to its 65-70% oil content, is one of the most important oil plants of today. Although sunflower is not very selective in terms of the soil it is grown, it has high yield potential in the soil that is rich in organic substances, deep and with good water retaining capacity. It can be cultivated on any kind of soil from sandy soils to clay soils with heavy structure that have good drainage. The weight of one thousand sunflower seeds is 70 to 200 grams. The oily varieties have smaller seeds and the nut varieties have bigger seeds. The oil rate of the small seeds is more than the ones with bigger seeds. The ratio of hull in sunflower seeds is 35 percent and the ratio of kernel is 65 percent. The oil ratio of the husked ones is 45-55 percent and the kernel oil ratio is 65-70 percent. It is a very nutritional animal feed as sunflower meal has a significant rate (20 percent) of protein and a little oil (1-7 percent). Milled floral receptacle of sunflower is used as feed for poultry, sheep and goats.

WORLD SUNFLOWER SEED PRODUCTION AND PRODUCER COUNTRIES According to data of US Department of Agriculture Foreign Agricultural Service (USDA FAS); world sunflower production, which was 39,4 million tons in 2014/15 season, reached to 40,4 million tons in 2015/16 season and it is estimated that it increased to 44,8 million tons in 2016/17 season. The leading sunflower producer country is Ukraine. According to data of USDA, 10,2 million tons of global sunflower seed production which is 39,4 million tons in 2014/15 season is realized by only Ukraine. The second sunflower producer is Russia. In the same season, Russia produced 8,3 million tons of sunflower seeds. As to 2014/15 data, EU countries with 9 million tons, Argentina with 3,1 million tons and Turkey with 1,2 million tons follow Ukraine and Russia.

In 2015/16 season, Ukraine produced 11,9 million tons of sunflower seed and it is estimated that it increased this amount to 13,7 million tons in 2016/17 season. It is estimated that Russia which ranks second in global sunflower seed production increased its production amount in 2015/16 season which was 9,1 million tons to 10,5 million tons in 2016/17 season. It is estimated that EU countries which produced 7,6 million tons of sunflower seed in 2015/16 produced 8,4 million tons of sunflower seed. It is also estimated that Argentina which is following right after EU countries and produced 2,7 million tons of sunflower seed in 2015/16 season produced 3,3 million tons of sunflower seed in 2016/17 season. Sunflower seed production amount of Turkey is 1 million tons in 2015/16; the estimated amount for 2016/17 is 1,2 million tons.

WORLD SUNFLOWER SEED CONSUMPTION AND CONSUMER COUNTRIES According to data of USDA, global sunflower seed consumption which was 39,5 million tons in 2014/15 season reached to 40,8 million tons in 2015/16 season. The estimated amount for 2016/17 season is 44,5 million tons. As to the data for 2014/15 season, Ukraine is the leading country in sunflower seed consumption with 10,4 million tons. Russia and EU countries with 8,6 million tons, Argentina with 2,8 million tons and Turkey with 1,7 million tons follow Ukraine. As to the data for 2015/16 season, Ukraine consumed 11,8 million tons, Russia consumed 9 million tons, EU countries consumed 8,1 million tons, Argentina consumed 2,8 million tons and Turkey consumed 1,3 million tons of sunflower. As to the estimated data for 2016/17 season, Ukraine consumed 13,5 million tons, Russia consumed 10,3 million tons, EU countries consumed 8,6 million tons, Argentina consumed 3 million tons and Turkey consumed 1,5 million tons of sunflower.

WORLD SUNFLOWER MEAL PRODUCTION AND PRODUCER COUNTRIES Sunflower is a very nutritional animal feed as sunflower meal has a significant rate of protein. World sunflower meal production has been recorded as 16,1 million tons in 2014/15 season. It is estimated that the production amount which was 16,5 million tons in 2015/16 season has been realized as 18,2 million tons in 2016/17 season. The leading country in sunflower meal is Ukraine as it is in sunflower seed. Ukraine which produced 4,2 million tons of sunflower meal in 2014/15 season, increased this amount to 4,7 million tons in 2015/16 season. It is estimated that Ukraine produced 5,4 million tons of sunflower meal in 2016/17 season. Russia which ranks second right after Ukraine produced 3,3 million tons in 2014/15 season and 3,5 million tons in 20156/16 season. The estimated production amount of sunflower meal for 2016/17 season is 4 million tons. EU countries which rank third in production produced 4,1 million tons in 2014/15 season and 3,8 million tons in 2015/16 season. The estimated sunflower meal production of EU countries for 2016/17 season is 4,1 million tons. It recorded that Argentina produced 1,1 million tons of sunflower meal and Turkey produced 850 thousand tons in 2014/15 season. This amounts were recorded as 1,1 million tons and 685 thousand tons relatively in 2015/16 season. It is estimated that Argentina produced 1,2 million tons and Turkey produced 750 thousand tons of sunflower meal in 2016/17 season.

WORLD SUNFLOWER MEAL CONSUMPTION AND CONSUMER COONTRIES World sunflower meal consumption is also dominated by the countries which are the leading ones in sunflower meal production. 7,1 million tons of world sunflower meal consumption which was 15,7 million tons in 2014/15 season were consumed by EU countries. Russia consumed 2 million tons and Turkey consumed 1,6 million tons. 6,9 million tons of world sunflower meal consumption which was 16,2 million tons in 2015/16 season were consumed by EU countries. Russia consumed 2,2 million tons and Turkey consumed 1,5 million tons. It is estimated that 17,6 million tons of world sunflower meal were consumed in 2016/17 season. 7,7 million tons of world sunflower meal consumption which was of 17,6 million tons were consumed by EU countries. It is also estimated that Russia consumed 2,5 million tons and Turkey consumed 1,6 million tons of sunflower meal.

WORLD SUNFLOWER SEED TRADE According to the data of USDA, global sunflower seed trade is around 1,5 million tons. 470 thousand tons of global sunflower seed import which was 1,5 million tons in 2014/15 season were realized by Turkey. EU countries with 266 thousand tons, Russia with 88 thousand tons and Ukraine with 15 thousand tons follow Turkey in sunflower seed imports. 622 thousand tons of global sunflower seed import which was 1,8 million tons in 2015/16 season were realized by EU countries. Turkey with 396 thousand tons, Russia with 121 thousand tons and Ukraine with 22 thousand tons follows EU countries in sunflower seed imports. World sunflower seed trade was recorded as 1,5 million tons in 2016/17 season. It is estimated that EU countries imported 500 thousand tons, Turkey imported 350 thousand tons, Russia imported 50 thousand tons and Ukraine imported 15 thousand tons in 2016/17 season.

518 thousand tons of global sunflower seed export which was 1,6 million tons in 2014/15 season were realized by EU countries. Argentina with 63 thousand tons, Russia with 61 thousand tons and Ukraine with 45 thousand tons follows EU countries in sunflower seed exports. Turkey exported 28 thousand tons of sunflower seed. 426 thousand tons of global sunflower seed export which was 2 million tons in 2015/16 season was realized by EU countries. Argentina with 300 thousand tons, Russia with 104 thousand tons and Ukraine with 83 thousand tons and Turkey with 42 thousand tons follow EU countries in sunflower seed exports. The estimated amount of world sunflower seed exports for 2016/17 season is 1,7 million tons. It is also estimated that EU countries exported 350 thousand tons, Argentina exported 218 thousand tons, Russia exported 120 thousand tons, Ukraine exported 150 thousand tons and Turkey exported 20 thousand tons of sunflower seed in 2016/17 season.

WORLD SUNFLOWER MEAL TRADE According to the data of USDA, global sunflower meal trade is more than 6 million tons. 3,2 million tons of global sunflower meal import which was 5,5 million tons in 2014/15 season were realized by EU countries. Turkey, with 773 thousand tons, follows EU countries in global sunflower meal imports. 3,2 million tons of global sunflower meal import which was 5,9 million tons in 2015/16 season were realized by EU countries. Turkey, with 801 thousand tons, follows EU countries in global sunflower meal imports. The estimated amount of world sunflower meal imports for 2016/17 is 6,6 million tons. It is also estimated that EU countries imported 3,8 million tons and Turkey imported 880 thousand tons of sunflower meal in 2016/17 season.

3,3 million tons of global sunflower meal exports which was 5,8 million tons in 2014/15 season were realized by Ukraine. Russia, with 1,3 million tons, Argentina with 556 thousand tons and EU countries with 229 thousand tons follows Ukraine in global sunflower meal exports. Turkey exported 7 thousand tons of sunflower meal. 3,8 million tons of global sunflower meal exports which was 6,1 million tons in 2015/16 season were realized by Ukraine. In this season, Russia, with 1,3 million tons, Argentina with 680 thousand tons, EU countries with 215 thousand tons and Turkey with 4 thousand tons follow Ukraine in global sunflower meal exports. The estimated amount of global sunflower meal exports was 7,4 million tons in 2016/17 season. It is also estimated that Ukraine exported 4,8 million tons, Russia exported 1,6 million tons, Argentina exported 580 thousand tons, EU countries exported 200 thousand tons and Turkey exported 5 thousand tons of sunflower meal in 2016/17.
