New era in protein trade: China opens door to Spanish animal protein feed

11 May 20262 min reading

China’s official approval for imports of processed animal protein-based feed products from Spain marks a development that could influence not only bilateral trade but also global feed ingredient flows. The decision is seen as the beginning of a broader shift that may create new export and raw material opportunities across the value chain, from rendering facilities to feed manufacturers.

China has formally allowed the import of selected animal protein-based feed products from Spain. Under the new regulation, processed proteins such as pork-derived meat and bone meal, blood products and intestinal mucosa protein meal will now be eligible for entry into the Chinese market.

The move follows a new agricultural and food cooperation agreement signed between the two countries in April. The Spanish government views the development as a strategic step, particularly in terms of adding value to by-products from its large pork sector.

Industry players suggest the opening may not remain limited to Spain. As China continues to diversify its alternative protein sourcing strategy, new export opportunities could emerge for Europe’s rendering and processed animal protein sectors.

The decision is also highlighted in terms of sustainability, as the reintegration of animal by-products into the feed chain supports waste reduction, resource efficiency and alternative protein use—issues that have gained increasing importance in recent years.

Experts note that access to the Chinese market will remain subject to strict veterinary protocols, traceability requirements and facility approval processes.

Spain is among Europe’s largest pork producers, while China has been steadily pursuing policies to diversify feed ingredient supply and expand alternative protein sources.
