mustafa aslanProf. Dr. Murat Aslan, Dean of the Faculty of Aquaculture at Atatürk University, said the Turkish aquaculture sector is a very important export source. Speaking at the 5th Fish Feeding and Feed Technology Workshop held on September 6-7 in Erzurum, Murat Aslan pointed out that Turkey uses only a small portion of its current potential. Reminding that according to The World Food and Agriculture Organization's (FAO) report the world's population will reach 10 billion by 2050 and the current feed production needs to be increased by 60 percent, Aslan expressed that the most promising sector in terms of meeting this need is aquaculture according to the reports of the same institution. Aslan continued his words as follows: "The aquaculture sector, which continues to grow rapidly in our country, has used or uses only a small part of our existing potential and it is clear that there is a great distance to be covered in this area. The only animal products we export to European Union countries turns out to be aquaculture."
