The European Commission, led by President Ursula von der Leyen, has launched a strategic dialogue on agriculture, setting the foundation for her second term. The initiative, involving key European farming groups Copa and Cogeca, aims to prioritize food security, sustainability, and farmer empowerment.
In a key development for European agriculture, Professor Strohschneider presented the conclusions of a seven-month strategic dialogue to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. This dialogue was initiated in response to the shortcomings of the previous Farm to Fork strategy, seeking to implement a more inclusive decision-making process. The results will contribute to the creation of an "Agri-Food Vision" for Europe.
Copa and Cogeca, major farming groups in Europe, who actively participated in the dialogue, praised the report for recognizing agriculture as a strategic sector and emphasized the need for urgent action on competitive sustainability. The recommendations include financing agricultural transitions through public-private partnerships and strengthening the role of farmers within the value chain.
Cogeca President Lennart Nilson noted the importance of cooperative enterprises in strengthening farmers' roles within the value chain. Meanwhile, Copa President Christiane Lambert called for continued dialogue, stressing the need for involvement from the European Parliament and Council.
The proposal to create a European Board on Agri-Food (EBAF) for ongoing discussions was welcomed, but Copa and Cogeca emphasized the need for greater transparency and broader involvement of farmers and agri-cooperatives.
