The European Commission has imposed provisional anti-dumping duties on lysine imports from China, raising concerns across the EU feed sector. Industry leaders warn of market distortions and inflationary pressures.

The European Commission’s decision to impose high anti-dumping duties on lysine imports from China has sparked widespread concern among EU feed and livestock producers. Published on January 14, 2025, the regulation aims to counteract alleged dumping practices but is being criticized for its potential economic consequences.

FEFAC President Pedro Cordero stated, “The EU depends on China for 60% of its lysine demand, and there are no sufficient alternative supplies from EU production or other third countries.” He warned that the high tariffs could lead to market disruptions and inflate lysine prices, particularly impacting the poultry and pig sectors.

Cordero called on the European Commission to provide financial support for livestock farmers to mitigate the weakening competitiveness caused by the measure. He also urged policymakers to classify essential amino acids and vitamins as “critical materials” to reduce dependency on China and stimulate EU-based production.

FEFAC emphasized its commitment to fair competition while advocating for policies that encourage strategic investment in the EU feed additives supply chain. The organization represents 23 national associations across the EU and associate members in the UK, Norway, Switzerland, and Turkey.
