The European Union has authorized vermiculite as a technological feed additive for the first time. The approval allows its use as an anti-caking agent in specific poultry categories under defined inclusion levels, expanding the list of authorized feed additives available to the industry.
The European Union has granted its first authorization for vermiculite as a feed additive under Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2026/1234. The authorization covers its use in feed for broiler chickens, pullets intended for laying or breeding, and laying hens.

Vermiculite has been approved as a technological additive within the functional group of anti-caking agents. Anti-caking agents are used to improve the flowability of feed materials and prevent ingredients from clumping during storage, handling and feed manufacturing, helping maintain consistent processing and product quality.
Under the regulation, vermiculite must be included in complete feed containing 12% moisture at a minimum and maximum level of 10,000 mg/kg. When used directly in single feed materials or complementary feed, the additive must also be applied at a minimum level of 10,000 mg/kg of feed.

The authorization was highlighted by the German Feed Association (DVT) in its latest regulatory update, which noted that the measure was the only new implementing regulation on feed additives adopted by the European Commission in June.
The authorization adds vermiculite to the EU Register of Feed Additives and provides feed manufacturers with an additional technological option for improving feed handling in approved poultry applications. Companies placing products on the EU market must comply with the conditions of use laid down in Regulation (EU) 2026/1234.
