EFSA has confirmed the safety and efficacy of Hy-D® for all terrestrial and aquatic animals. The opinion paves the way for EU-wide approval by early 2026.
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has issued a positive scientific opinion on the safety and efficacy of 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (25-OH-D₃), marketed as Hy-D®, produced by dsm-firmenich Animal Nutrition & Health. The endorsement covers all terrestrial and aquatic animal species, including salmonids and other fish, expanding the product’s previously approved use in poultry, swine, and ruminants.

“This opinion from EFSA marks a key milestone for Hy-D®, demonstrating its global relevance and potential as a reliable source of vitamin D across all animal species,” said Emrah Mazi, Head of Special Nutrients at dsm-firmenich Animal Nutrition & Health. “We are excited about what this means for the future of Hy-D® in helping customers around the world advance animal health and performance with confidence.”
Hy-D®, a metabolite of vitamin D3, supports optimal 25-OH-D₃ levels in animals, benefiting performance, productivity, and overall wellbeing. Final authorization from the European Commission is pending and expected within several months. Subject to approval, Hy-D® could be commercially available across the EU for aquaculture and all other species by early 2026.
