FEFAC and leading agri-food organizations in Europe have called for the swift conclusion of negotiations on the regulation of New Genomic Techniques. In a joint statement, 11 organizations underlined that a science-based legal framework is vital to enhance the competitiveness and resilience of Europe’s food and feed sectors.
In a joint declaration, FEFAC and twelve other organizations from the European agri-food and feed value chain urged EU policymakers to conclude the negotiations on the New Genomic Techniques (NGTs) Regulation without delay. They emphasized that the legislation is essential for supporting innovation, sustainability, and resilience across the sector.

Thanks to the leadership of the Polish presidency of the Council of the European Union, discussions have made "good progress" despite a few key issues still under debate. The coalition welcomed this momentum and called on the upcoming Danish presidency to build on it and prioritize the file.
"In a context where sustainability, climate change and food security challenges are becoming more and more pressing, the EU urgently needs a science-based and adequate legal framework for NGT plants and derived products," the statement read. The group warned against imposing traceability and labeling requirements for Category 1 NGT plants, arguing that doing so would place Europe at a disadvantage compared to global competitors.
The declaration was co-signed by CEFS, COCERAL, CropLife Europe, ECA, Europatat, European Flour Millers, FEDIOL, FoodDrinkEurope, Primary Food Processors (PFP), Starch Europe, and FEFAC.
