Many grains groups such as wheat, corn, barley, oats and millet have a strategic importance in the world. These products, which have been cultured by humans since the early ages, are also extremely important sources of animal feeding as well as human nutrition. Animal feed is the most important area where such grains are used after human nutrition.

Feeds used in animal husbandry are generally divided into two groups: roughage and mixed feed. Our main focus will be on the mixed feeds obtained by processing grains. These feeds are important in the sheep and cattle nutrition and aquaculture groups; besides, they constitute the basic nutritional needs in the poultry group.

With the increasing modernization of agriculture, poultry sector has become more extensive. In this respect, feeding of poultry has also improved. The modern feeds used for the poultry group are predominantly grains like barley, wheat and rye; oilseed pulp like sunflower seeds, cotton seeds, soybean, peanut and hazelnut pulp; proteins of animal origin such as fish, meat-bone and blood flour and energy sources and vitamins, minerals, premixes from vegetable oils and medicinal additive. The amount of feed and nutritional content may vary depending on the weight and age of the poultry.

WORLDWIDE POULTRY FEED PRODUCTION According to the Alltech Global Feed Survey 2016 report, an increase of 14 percent was observed in the world feed industry in 2015. Looking at the trends of the last five years, it is seen that this increase is predominantly caused by the poultry and aquatic products group. Another important reason for this increase is the concentration of production in Africa, the Middle East, Latin America and Europe. Alltech's 2016 study shows that the leading industry in feed production worldwide is once again the poultry group. The poultry group, which grows much faster than other sectors, accounts for about 47 percent of total feed production.

World poultry feed volume, which grew by 10 percent compared to 2011 and registered as 417.8 million tons in 2012, rose to 444 million tons in 2013. In 2014, production decreased slightly to 440 million tons and in 2015 it increased by 24 million tons to 464 million tons. When compared with the overall feed production sector, the poultry feed production was 44 percent in 2012, 46 percent in 2013, and 45 percent in 2014 and it increased to 47 percent in 2015.

BROILER The broiler group accounted for 246 tons of the total amount of poultry feed produced in 2012. It can be seen that the broiler group accounted for 272 million tons of total poultry feed production (444 million tons) in 2013, 280.6 million tons in 2014 and 295 million tons in 2015. Looking at the regional distribution of feed produced for the broiler in 2015, it is seen that the Asia Pacific region occupied the first place with 98,10 million tons. The Asia Pacific region is followed by North America with 63.12 million tons, Latin America with 61.07 million tons, Europe with 53.33 million tons, Africa with 12.52 million tons and the Middle East with 6.47 million tons.

In 2012, the total output of the top ten countries for feed production for the broiler was 160,8 million tons. The US came first with 57,2 million tons, followed by Brazil with 33,2 million tons, China with 20 million tons, India with 10,5 million tons, Mexico with 10,3 million tons, Russia with 9,4 million tons, Indonesia with 6,2 million tons, Thailand with 6 million tons, Turkey and Iran with 4 million tons. In 2013, the total output of the top ten countries was 182 million tons. In 2014, the total output of the top ten countries was 182 million tons. The US came first with 57 million tons, followed by China with 50 million tons, Brazil with 33 million tons, Mexico and India with 10 million tons, Russia with 9 million tons, Japan with 4 million tons and Spain, Germany and France with 3 million tons,. The total output of the top ten countries for poultry feed production in 2014 was 173 million tons. According to this, the US came first with 55 million tons, followed by China with 41 million tons, Brazil with 31 million tons, Mexico and India with 11 million tons, Russia with 10 million tons, Japan and Germany with 4 million tons, Spain and France with 3 million tons. The total output of the top ten countries for poultry feed production in 2015 was 186,4 million tons. The US came first with 59.92 million tons, followed by China with 49 million tons, Brazil with 30,9 million tons, India and Mexico with 11,6 and 11,44 million tons respectively, Russia with 10,5 million tons, Japan with 3,8 million tons, France with 3,5 million tons, Spain with 3 million tons and Germany with 2.7 million tons.

LAYER HEN The feed production for the layer hens comes second after the feed production for the poultry group. It is observed that 141.1 million tons of total poultry feed produced in 2012 was used for layer hen production. It is seen that the layer hen group accounted for 144 million tons of poultry feed production (444 million tons) in 2013, 130.3 million tons in 2014 and 142 million tons in 2015.

Looking at the regional distribution of feed produced in 2015 for the layer hen group, it is seen that the Asia Pacific region came first with 60.3 million tons, followed by North America with 25.7 million tons, Europe with 25 million tons, Latin America with 17.3 million tons, Africa with 8.3 million tons and the Middle East with 5.7 million tons. In 2012, the total output of the top ten countries for feed production for layer chickens was 91,9 million tons. China came first with 29.4 million tons, followed by the USA with 23 million tons, India with 7 million tons, Japan with 6,4 million tons, Brazil with 5,1 million tons, Indonesia with 5,063 million tons, Mexico with 4,6 million tons, Iran with 4 million tons, Russia with 3.8 million tons and Italy with 3.5 million tons. In 2013, the total output of the top ten countries was 88 million tons. China came first with 31 million tons, followed by the USA with 23 million tons, India with 9 million tons, Japan with 6 million tons, Brazil with 5 million tons and Mexico, Russia and India with 4 million tons follow. In 2014, the total output of the top ten countries for feed production for layer chickens is 79 million tons. China came first with 24 million tons, followed by the USA with 20 million tons, India with 9 million tons, Brazil and Japan with 6 million tons, Mexico and Russia with 4 million tons, Spain, Germany and France with 2 million tons. In 2015, the total output of the top ten countries for feed production for layer chickens was 87,3 million tons. China came first with 28 million tons, followed by the USA with 24.7 million tons, India with 9.3 million tons, Japan with 6.2 million tons, Brazil with 5.5 million tons, Russia with 4.20 million tons, Mexico with 4.1 million tons, Germany with 2.6 million tons, France with 1.8 million tons and Spain with 1.79 million tons.

OTHER POULTRY It is observed that 30.4 million tons of total poultry feed produced in 2012 was used in the production of other poultry. The produced feed was mainly used in turkey production. The other poultry group accounted for 28.8 million tons of total poultry feed production (444 million tons) in 2013, 14.3 million tons in 2014 and 16 million tons in 2015.

The leading country in this group in 2012 was China. It is seen that China came first by producing 11 million tons of feed in 2012 for use in the production of turkeys and other poultry, followed by the USA with 6,5 tons and France with 3,1 tons. The three leading countries in 2014 and 2015 were the USA with 7 million tons and Brazil and France with 1 million ton. In 2015, the US continued its leadership with 7 million tons, followed by Brazil with 1.5 million tons, Germany with 1.4 million tons and France with 1.1 million tons.
