Veramaris
and Merwetank have teamed up to build a bulk algae oil storage facility in
Dordrecht, aiming to improve supply security and logistics efficiency for
aquafeed producers. The new infrastructure marks a first-of-its-kind move in
the algae oil sector and supports growing demand for sustainable Omega-3
sources.
The Dutch algae oil producer Veramaris, a joint venture of DSM and Evonik, has entered a strategic partnership with Merwetank B.V. to construct a bulk storage tank near Rotterdam, expected to become operational by mid-Q4 2025. This development enables large-volume deliveries of algae oil directly to coastal aquafeed factories in Europe, lowering transportation costs, simplifying logistics and reducing carbon emissions.

“This new setup brings our product much closer to customers’ existing supply chains,” said Holger Kinzel, CFO of Veramaris. “It’s a great example of how we’re scaling up with our partners to support bulk deliveries and the continued growth of sustainable aquaculture.”
Merwetank, a specialist in food-grade bulk logistics, will operate the facility, which includes advanced systems to protect product integrity. The algae oil is FAMI-QS certified, while Merwetank holds FSSC 22000 and GMP+ certifications, ensuring safety across the supply chain.
Veramaris is the first in the industry to offer bulk storage and large-scale delivery of algae oil, supporting the shift from fish oil dependency toward alternative Omega-3 sources in aquafeed. The company produces ASC-MSC certified algae oil at industrial scale.
