The European Feed Manufacturers’ Federation (FEFAC) has published its 6th Feed Sustainability Charter 2030 Progress Report, evaluating the sector’s advances across climate neutrality and resource efficiency. Issued alongside new European Commission initiatives, the report outlines concrete steps to strengthen European feed and food chains against strategic supply chain vulnerabilities.

FEFAC’s latest progress report aligns with the European Commission's strategic objective under the EU Protein Plan to increase the share of EU-grown oilseeds and protein crops in domestic animal feed from roughly 25% today to 35% by 2035. However, the federation stresses that Europe’s strategic exposure extends well beyond plant proteins to essential feed additives, particularly synthetic amino acids and vitamins, where European feed manufacturers remain heavily reliant on a small group of non-EU suppliers. Addressing these vulnerabilities requires policy frameworks that recognize livestock and feed production as vital assets for regional food security.

Over the past year, FEFAC advanced several sustainability benchmarks, including expanding the Global Feed Lifecycle Assessment Center (GFLI) database and promoting circular feed solutions. Newly elected FEFAC President Nicolas Coudry-Mesny stated: "The EU Livestock Strategy and Protein Action Plan provide an important new policy direction, with a strong focus on practical actions to strengthen our food and feed chains and address strategic dependencies. At the same time, our sector continues to deliver solutions on the ground."

The publication comes as the European Commission officially adopts its new EU Protein Plan and EU Livestock Strategy to bolster regional agricultural resilience.
