The USDA announced a comprehensive $1 billion strategy to combat avian influenza, safeguard the poultry industry, and reduce soaring egg prices. The plan includes measures for biosecurity, financial relief for farmers, and efforts to foster vaccine research.

On February 26, 2025, the USDA revealed its multi-faceted approach to address the causes of the egg price surge driven by highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI). The plan allocates $500 million to strengthen biosecurity measures, $400 million in financial relief for affected poultry farmers, and $100 million to explore vaccine research.

“The Biden administration did little to address the repeated outbreaks and high egg prices that followed. By contrast, the Trump administration is taking the issue seriously,” the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins stated, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. “American farmers need relief, and American consumers need affordable food. To every family struggling to buy eggs: We hear you, we’re fighting for you, and help is on the way.”

The USDA’s strategy includes expanded biosecurity audits for egg-layer facilities, financial support for repopulating depopulated flocks, and efforts to remove regulatory barriers that hinder egg production. Additionally, the department highlighted the need to explore temporary import options and collaboration on vaccine and therapeutic solutions to protect egg-laying chickens.
