US yield cuts and climate risks push global corn prices to three-year high

25 August 20262 min reading

Corn futures have surged following downgraded US crop estimates and compounding supply chain disruptions across key export regions. Weather-related yield losses and persistent geopolitical bottlenecks continue to tighten global balance sheets.

Most active corn contracts on the Chicago Board of Trade reached $5.25 per bushel, registering their highest level since July 2023 before stabilizing around $5.18. Prices have gained over 11% since late July and more than 17% year-to-date, driven by mounting supply constraints across major producing regions.

The primary driver behind the bullish momentum stems from recent Midwest field tour inspections across the US Corn Belt. Following extensive crop surveys, Pro Farmer projected US 2026 corn production to drop 9.9% year-on-year to 15.344 billion bushels. With average yield expectations revised downward to 173.2 bushels per acre, the US faces its lowest productivity level since 2020.

EL NIÑO HAZARDS, LOGISTICS, AND INDUSTRIAL DEMAND

Beyond North American crop reductions, compounding international factors continue to squeeze global balances. The ongoing El Niño weather pattern threatens corn yields across South America—particularly Brazil—as well as Southeast Asia. Concurrently, escalating attacks on Black Sea shipping routes have disrupted grain exports from Ukraine and Russia. Furthermore, elevated crude oil prices sustain robust demand for ethanol production, an industrial sector that absorbs roughly 60% of world corn supply. With the persistent effects of El Niño, corn prices are expected to maintain their upward trajectory.

Declining global production prospects and logistical uncertainties are expected to drive reformulations toward alternative energy ingredients, maintaining upward pressure on feed manufacturing margins.
