Amid the Russian invasion, Ukraine declared sowing campaign. Ukrainian authorities forecast that 70% of the arable land will be cultivated.

While the ongoing war in Ukraine has triggered an increase in grain, feed and food prices, as well as food security concerns for the next year, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that a sowing campaign had been launched throughout the country. Volodymyr Zelensky, in his address to the nation, declared a sewing campaign throughout the country, including the Luhansk and Donetsk regions which are located in the eastern part of the country. “The Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food reported that the sowing campaign has begun and continues in all regions of our country, including Luhansk and Donetsk,” Zelensky said.

In order to maintain the planting activities, the Council of Ministers provided approximately 120 million dollars of financing to farmers. The government also decided to simplify the registration of agricultural machinery. Recently, the Ministry of Agricultural Policy of Ukraine claimed that at worst, farmers will be able to cultivate 70% of arable land in Ukraine this year.

After the Russian invasion that started on February 24 in the country, more than 10 million out of 44 million Ukrainians had to leave their homes. Making humanitarian statements on one side, the Western governments are also worried about the possibility of a possible food crisis on the other side. In this context, it has been a matter of great concern whether the sowing activities would continue under the conditions of the ongoing war.
