Turkey updates its agricultural data infrastructure through nationwide census

Under a presidential decree, Turkey will launch a nationwide general agricultural census to collect updated and comprehensive data on agriculture and livestock.

A major agricultural data update has been announced across Turkey. According to the Presidential Circular dated May 9, 2025, a General Agricultural Census will be conducted in cooperation with the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat). The initiative aims to manage the food supply chain—from production to final consumption—on the basis of accurate data and to establish a sustainable record-keeping system.

The census will be carried out in two phases. In the first phase, farmlands not yet recorded in administrative data and the agricultural enterprises operating on them will be identified. Questionnaires and data entry systems will also be developed. In the second phase, TurkStat will collect field data in 2025 using both full enumeration and sampling methods, focusing on variables such as agricultural holdings, labor, land, livestock, and farming equipment.

The circular states that public institutions are responsible for ensuring the census is completed smoothly and on time, noting: “All necessary support and assistance will be provided by all public institutions and organizations, especially provincial governors.”
