Qu Dongyu becomes new director-general of FAO

Qu Dongyu, Deputy Director of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of the People's Republic of China (PRC), became the director-general of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nation (FAO).

Qu Dongyu is elected as the new director-general of Agricultural and Food Organization of the United Nations (FAO), headquartered in Rome, Italy. The election for the FAO General Directorate was won by the Chinese Qu, who outvoted rivals, French Catherine Geslain-Laneelle, and Georgian Davit Kirvalize. Qu, Laneelle, and Kirvalize won 108, 71 and 12 votes respectively in the election where 191 FAO members voted in total. "I want to thank my homeland after 40 years of open policy and successful reform," said Qu Dongyu, the 9th Director-General of FAO history and the first Chinese to be elected to this post, in his thank-you speech. Qu Dongyu promised modern and digital agricultural incentives to the regions with poverty, hunger, and drought during the election campaign and emphasized that China's New Silk Road project includes significant investments to third world countries. The election of Qu Dongyu as FAO Director-General also drew attention to the fact that it coincided with a period of a trade war between the US and China. Qu Dongyu, China's Deputy Minister of Agriculture will take up the post of FAO Director-General from Brazilian Jose Graziano da Silva on 1 August and will continue for four years. Turkey's Ambassador to Rome and Permanent Representative before the UN agencies Ambassador Murat Salim Esenli, congratulated Qu Dongyu and wished him success in his speech at the FAO General Conference. Esenli also expressed that Turkey is ready for giving Qu Dongyu the necessary support within the scope of the fulfillment of 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and to cooperate.
