The official trailer for “World Without Cows,” a documentary examining the multifaceted effects of cattle on economies, ecosystems, and nutrition, has been released. Filmed over three years across 40 global locations, the film challenges prevailing narratives surrounding cattle farming.

The recently unveiled trailer for “World Without Cows” presents a thought-provoking exploration of the critical roles cattle play in our world. This documentary, led by journalists Michelle Michael and Brandon Whitworth, investigates the cultural, economic, and environmental significance of cattle, posing the challenging question: “Are we better off in a world without cows?”

Traveling to locations from the American Midwest to Kenya, India, and Brazil, the filmmakers engaged with a global network of agricultural and environmental scientists, farmers, ranchers, and academics. Their aim was to offer a nuanced perspective on the complexities surrounding cattle farming. Whitworth noted, “We talked to literally dozens and dozens of people around the world — various experts in a number of different fields,” emphasizing the depth of their inquiry.

The documentary features a diverse array of experts discussing cattle’s influence on food security, sustainability, and the environment. Jack Bobo, a food futurist, highlighted the increasing challenges of food production, stating, “For 10,000 years, farmers and ranchers have been asked to do one thing, and that’s produce more food… The challenge is, every day between now and 2050, it gets harder to feed the world.”

The filmmakers also address the misconceptions about cattle’s role in climate change. Dr. John Lynch, a climatologist from the University of Oxford, remarked, “Cows are not the biggest contributor to climate change. That’s still fossil fuels.” This perspective is echoed by Dr. Frank Mitloehner, who insists that while animal agriculture must work towards reducing its environmental impact, it is essential not to overstate cattle’s contribution to emissions.

“World Without Cows” aims to shift the narrative around cattle by providing a balanced discussion that combines scientific research with real-world experiences. Michael emphasized the responsibility they felt in sharing these insights, saying, “The more we learned, it was like we didn’t have a choice. We had a responsibility. We had to tell this story.”

The 85-minute film seeks to broaden conversations about cattle, encouraging viewers to consider their vital role in global ecosystems and food systems. As Whitworth explains, “This isn’t just an opinion-based conversation where people are yelling their own thoughts and opinions at you. These are doctors, Ph.Ds., farmers, ranchers and people who have firsthand experience and education in all these areas. It’s facts. It’s science.”

“World Without Cows” will be featured in upcoming film festivals, including the Twelve Lions Film Festival and the San Pedro International Film Festival.
