Steven
Savage of Forbes magazine wrote an article about the use of certain insect
species as animal feed. Examining the issue new for some people, Savage also
mentioned the facility that is being designed and built by Swiss Bühler and
French Agronutris and start production in 2023.
Forbes magazine, which is closely followed by the business circles, published a review on the use of insects as animal feed. Steven Savage, an agriculture analyst of the magazine, wrote an article on the role insects can play in the food cycle. Sharing general information on the use of insects as animal feed in his article, Savage also pointed to the facility built by Swiss technology giant Bühler and French insect-rearing company Agronutris.

In his article entitled "Could Insects Play A Bigger Role In Our Food Supply?", Savage underlined that the facility, which will start production in 2023, will process 70,000 metric tons of low-value side-stream feeds which will then be converted to high-value protein and lipids. It is stated that the French company has plans for a second, 210,000 metric ton facility in the country.
For the plant in Rethel, Agronutris is leveraging ten years of experience optimizing the biology of insect rearing and growth. Bühler engineers the insect feed preparation, the larvae growth units, climate control, and separation of larvae from the left-over feed and insect frass at the end of rearing. They also engineer a pasteurization step, and extraction of the clean final products.
The process in which low-quality protein is transformed into high-quality protein and up-cycle into the food chain is considered beneficial for the climate change agenda in general.
