Evonik has launched a plastic-free paper bag for its feed-grade methionine, reducing packaging-related CO2 emissions by 20%. The shift supports EU regulations and maintains product quality and shelf life.
Evonik Animal Nutrition has begun rolling out a new 25-kilogram paper bag for its DL-methionine product, MetAMINO®, removing the inner plastic film to significantly cut carbon emissions and plastic waste. The redesigned packaging is fully recyclable under EU standards (PAP 22 classification) and is aligned with the bloc’s upcoming Packaging & Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).

For the Antwerp production site alone, the switch will eliminate 32 tons of polyethylene annually and reduce the packaging’s carbon footprint by 20%. Intensive testing has confirmed the new bags do not affect the 36-month shelf life or product quality.
“Product packaging plays an important role in our company’s efforts to reduce CO2 emissions and achieve a resource-conserving circular economy,” said Dr. Dirk Hoehler, who oversees the amino acid business at Evonik Animal Nutrition.
The transition has started in Antwerp, with other facilities in Singapore and Mobile (USA) to follow. Evonik’s packaging experts have spent years developing alternatives for MetAMINO® and other feed ingredients, aiming to balance performance, safety, and sustainability in livestock nutrition solutions.
