The EU compound feed production is forecast to grow by 0.5% in 2024, reaching 147 million tons. Poultry feed shows notable recovery, while pig and cattle feed sectors face varied pressures.

The European compound feed market is projected to see a modest increase in production, with 147 million tons expected in 2024, according to FEFAC, the European Compound Feed Manufacturers’ Federation. Poultry feed is leading the recovery, with production anticipated to grow by 1.3%, as key member states like France, Spain, and Portugal rebound from Avian Influenza outbreaks. However, challenges persist in Hungary and Italy due to ongoing H5N1 outbreaks.

Cattle feed production is expected to remain steady, influenced by the availability of roughages and regional variations. The pig feed sector is stabilizing after significant declines, with slight growth in countries like Spain (+5%), Ireland (+3%), and Poland (+1.9%). Despite this, overall pig production in the EU remains under pressure from African Swine Fever (ASF) and policy measures aimed at reducing emissions, particularly in Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands.

FEFAC’s report highlights ongoing economic and regulatory challenges shaping the feed industry. “Policy pressures and animal health issues will continue to weigh on production dynamics across the EU,” the report notes. The European feed industry employs over 100,000 people across 3,200 production sites and generates a turnover of €50 billion annually.
