dsm-firmenich secures EU authorization for Hy-D® across aquaculture and all animal species

dsm-firmenich Animal Nutrition & Health has announced a new European Union authorization for Hy-D®, extending its use to aquaculture and all animal species. The decision marks a regulatory first for 25-hydroxycholecalciferol in EU aquaculture and broadens access for feed producers across the region.

dsm-firmenich Animal Nutrition & Health has received European Union authorization for Hy-D®, its 25-hydroxycholecalciferol (25-OH-D₃) produced from Saccharomyces cerevisiae CBS 146008, for use in salmonids, other fish species, and all remaining animal species. The product has already been authorized in the EU for pigs, poultry, and ruminants since 2024.

The European Commission’s decision allows Hy-D® to be commercially used as a nutritional feed additive across all animal species and aquaculture in the EU as of December 31, 2025. It represents the first authorization of 25-hydroxycholecalciferol for salmonids and aquatic species in the European market.

The European Food Safety Authority confirmed the safety and efficacy of Hy-D® for animals, consumers, users, and the environment, validating its yeast-based production process. As a vitamin D₃ metabolite, Hy-D® supports optimal 25-OH-D₃ levels and contributes to animal health, welfare, performance, and productivity.

“This new EU authorization for Hy-D® is a significant milestone, highlighting its reliability as a vitamin D source for aquaculture and all animal species,” said Emrah Mazi, Head of Special Nutrients at dsm-firmenich Animal Nutrition & Health.

The authorization follows a 25-year development journey for Hy-D® and comes as dsm-firmenich continues its review of ownership options for its Animal Nutrition & Health business, which reported €3.3 billion in sales in 2024.
