dsm-firmenich secures UK approval for its groundbreaking methane-reducing feed additive, a first-of-its-kind authorization in the country targeting environmental benefits.

Leading feed additive company dsm-firmenich, has received market authorization in the United Kingdom for its methane-reducing product, Bovaer. The feed additive product is designed to effectively and immediately reduce methane emissions from cattle, with average reductions in dairy cows reaching 30%. Notably, this marks the UK's first authorization for a feed additive specifically aimed at environmental benefits.

This approval provides English, Welsh, and Scottish dairy farmers with a scientifically proven solution to significantly and reliably lower their carbon footprint. Throughout the entire dairy value chain, including supporting processors, retailers, and the food services sector, the feed additive's use could result in a noteworthy 10-15% decrease in CO2 equivalents per liter of milk, impacting scope 3 emissions of dairy. Additionally, the adoption of this technology aligns with the UK's commitments to the Global Methane Pledge and the Climate Change Act.

Commenting on the market authorization, Mark van Nieuwland, Vice President at dsm-firmenich, expressed enthusiasm for the company's global impact and potential. “Construction on the new plant is well under way in Dalry Scotland to become operational in the course of 2025”, he said. dsm-firmenich aims to make the methane-reducing feed additive available to the UK dairy sector by early 2024.
