Which pests require fumigation?

08 September 20254 min reading

Fumigation is one of the most effective protection methods against pests encountered in the storage and export processes of agricultural and food products. However, for a successful application, it is critically important to know which pest is being targeted and the characteristics of that pest. This way, products are protected without any loss of quality and are accepted in international markets.

Fumigation is an effective method applied to protect products and storage areas from harmful organisms. It is especially important for ensuring that food products reach consumers in a healthy condition and that export processes proceed smoothly. However, for fumigation to be successful, it is necessary to know which pests are being targeted, as well as their behaviors and spreading characteristics.

WHAT IS FUMIGATION AND WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

Fumigation is an application that eliminates harmful insects, larvae, eggs and other organisms using gaseous chemicals. It is generally used in agricultural products, food storage facilities, ship holds, containers and silos. Gases such as phosphine are applied in sealed areas to ensure high airtightness and direct effect on pests.

One of the most important advantages of fumigation is that it renders pests ineffective at every stage of their life cycle. In other words, it can eliminate not only adult insects but also individuals in the egg and larval stages. This ensures the prevention of pest contamination especially during export processes, allowing products to be transported without any loss of quality and to be accepted in international markets.

1- PESTS THAT REQUIRE FUMIGATION

Fumigation can be applied against different pests in different environments. In general, these pests are divided into two main groups: organisms that harm agricultural products and pests found in storage areas.

Agricultural product pests

Agricultural products can be exposed to various pests at many stages, from production to storage. These pests damage both the physical structure of the products and pose microbiological risks. Below are the main agricultural pests that are controlled through fumigation.

Granary weevil (Sitophilus granarius)

One of the most commonly encountered pests in grain products. It damages wheat, barley and corn in storage in both larval and adult forms. It consumes the product from the inside, causing significant yield losses. Fumigation renders all life stages of this pest ineffective, preventing its spread.

Flour moth (Ephestia kuehniella)

Found in stored flour, pasta and similar products. Its larvae create web-like structures on the product surface, reducing quality and causing consumer complaints. Detection of this pest in export products can halt shipments.

Rice weevil

It is found in rice and similar grains, it consumes the product during storage and causes physical damage. Its rapid reproduction can quickly infest an entire storage facility.

Dried fruit moth

This pest occurs in products such as dried figs and apricots. Its larvae penetrate the fruit, preventing consumption and export. Its presence in packaged products can cause serious quality issues.

Hazelnut weevil

It damages the hazelnut shell, rendering the kernel unusable. It can cause significant economic losses in hazelnut production in the Black Sea region. Fumigation is also effective against this pest in the egg and larval stages.

2- PESTS FOUND IN STORAGE AREAS

Not only products but also the areas where products are stored are vulnerable to pest infestations. These pests generally reproduce rapidly in humid, dark and warm environments. Fumigation provides safe and effective control in these areas as well.

Saw-toothed grain beetle

This is a frequently encountered pest in grain storage that reproduces rapidly and damages products by gnawing. Often found alongside other insects, its spread can be prevented through fumigation.

Flour Moth

Not only in products but also in storage racks and around sacks in contact with flour and flour-based products. Therefore, storage areas should also be regularly fumigated.

Cockroaches

This is a major hygiene problem in food storage facilities. Even without direct contact with products, they pose a contamination risk through microorganisms they carry. Fumigation ensures effective cleaning of all areas, including egg-laying sites.

Bed bugs

They are usually found on wooden pallets or old shelving systems. While they do not directly harm human health, they pose a significant hygiene risk. They tend to spread especially in areas unused for long periods.

Fumigation provides effective protection against all of these pests. However, it should be noted that different pests require different gas dosages, exposure times and application techniques. Therefore, the procedure should only be carried out by expert firms and documented in accordance with all legal regulations.
