UN: Insurance for Ships Unavailable in Black Sea Grain Corridor

20 July 20232 min reading

The United Nations (UN) has confirmed that ships will not be able to secure insurance coverage following the termination of the Black Sea Grain Corridor Agreement by Russia. Insurance companies have excluded transportation activities related to the corridor, leading to concerns over the safety and security of shipping operations in the region.

UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric addressed journalists during a daily press conference, highlighting UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' commitment to ensuring the delivery of Ukraine and Russia's grain and fertilizer to the global market. Dujarric emphasized the Secretary-General's understanding of the vital importance of food security.

However, Dujarric stressed that security guarantees cannot be provided in the grain corridor due to the ongoing conflict in the region. The area is deemed a war zone, making it challenging to offer assurances for the safety of ships and cargo.

Dujarric mentioned that the UN Joint Coordination Center continues to provide advisory services in Istanbul and remains dedicated to the objectives of the Black Sea Grain Corridor Agreement and the agreement signed with Russia.

Regarding Russia's demands and concerns, Dujarric clarified that while Guterres is making efforts to address the situation, the UN does not have control over certain aspects, such as banking rules and the insurance market. The organization continues to engage with relevant stakeholders to find solutions.

The Black Sea Grain Corridor Agreement was signed by the UN, Russia, Turkey, and Ukraine on July 22, 2022, aiming to mitigate the impact of the Russia-Ukraine war on global food prices. Since its inception, the corridor facilitated the transport of approximately 33 million tons of grain, with Europe, Asia, Turkey, Africa, and the Middle East being major recipients. The recent suspension of the agreement due to Russia's decision not to renew it has raised concerns about potential increases in grain prices and its impact on global food security.
