The 5th World Tapioca Conference (WTC 2018) was held in Thailand on 27-28 June 2018. More than one thousand people attended the conference from Thailand and other countries. Feed Planet magazine was also there in order to follow up the event. 999999 Thailand hosted an international conference on tapioca. WTC 2018 took place on 27-28 June and attracted more than one thousand importers, exporters, entrepreneurs, farmers and interested public members, as well as the academia and the mass media from all over the world. Mr. Adul Chotinisakorn, Director-General of Thailand Department of Foreign Trade asserted: “WTC 2018 has indeed been a great success. Participants learned of future directions of tapioca production and trade, as well as modern cultivation technology and cutting-edge innovation in order to better their production to serve market demands. Exhibitions portraying the tapioca production from upstream to downstream well illustrated the constant development of Thailand’s tapioca industry. Tapioca is featured as a Magic Plant being used in the production of numerous goods and products, such as food, animal feed, renewable energy, chemical supplies, and packaging, among many others.” Feed Planet magazine was also there in order to follow up the event for its readers. Mr. Muhammed Akatay, International Sales and Marketing Director of the magazine, said “We are here for the World Tapioca Conference 2018. This is the fifth time this event is being organized and I can say that the entire organization is extremely professional.” Stating that the attendants were from various countries of the world, “Their interest in Feed Planet was also at a pleasing level,” he added. The conference also served as a networking forum for Thai entrepreneurs to discuss and share knowledge on tapioca production with foreign importers and producers from other regions – both the existing and the new markets. MOUs have been signed for the trade of tapioca and tapioca products between Thai companies and importers from various countries, including China, Turkey, Japan, India, and Indonesia. The total volume of the purchase orders was 1,490,000 tonnes, which was valued at 14 billion baht (430 million dollars). Tapioca, ‘magic plant’, is a commodity that is highly significant for the Thai economy. It generates income for over 500,000 households of Thai farmers with the production of around 28-30 million tons each year. And 70 per cent of this amount– the number that is constantly on the rise -- is exported to global market, earning about 100,000 million baht (3 billion dollars) in revenue for the country. This year, in particular, the average price of tapioca rockets to 3.15 baht/kg (~0,09 dollar/kg) - the highest in ten years. As such, tapioca is considered a Magic Plant that drives the country’s economy at all levels: local economy, production, and export. The success of WTC 2018 indeed underlines the Government’s effort towards stabilizing the price of agricultural products and raising the price of tapioca to promote sustainable income for farmers in line with the government strategy on tapioca development. Today, Thai tapioca is exporting 70% of its total tapioca products to world markets, and the volume is constantly expanding. In 2017, Thailand exported over 11.09 million tonnes of tapioca at the total value of 100,000 million baht (more than 3 billion dollars).
