The 14th International and Domestic Sorghum and Barley Market Seminar, held in Nantong, China, highlighted critical shifts in global grain trade dynamics and supply chain strategies. Drawing more than 160 key industry representatives, including international grain traders, malt companies, breweries, and research institutions, the premier event served as a major platform for addressing procurement challenges and alternative raw material utilization. Representatives from the U.S. Grains & BioProducts Council (USGBC) presented comprehensive outlooks on global sorghum production, export availability, and long-term supply-demand dynamics.

A pivotal theme emerging from the seminar sessions was the industry’s urgent call for greater transparency in sorghum and barley market information. Industry participants noted that verifying volatile market data and aligning peer perspectives are essential for mitigating risks in global sourcing. Furthermore, during the technical interactive sessions, attendees focused heavily on the specific nutritional characteristics of sorghum and its operational performance in commercial livestock feed formulations. As China continues to position sorghum as a primary component for livestock feed and industrial processing, maintaining reliable access to this market remains a critical factor for global supply chain resilience and price stability across the international feed and food sectors.

Accountable for nearly 80% of global sorghum imports, China primarily uses this raw material as an energy source in poultry and swine feed formulations. As the top destination for U.S. sorghum exports, demand fluctuations within the Chinese market directly impact global compound feed raw material parities and the price balance of corn and barley.
