FAO and IFIF reaffirm global partnership for sustainable feed and livestock transformation

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the International Feed Industry Federation (IFIF) renewed their long-standing collaboration during their 24th Annual Meeting, emphasizing the feed sector’s central role in building safe, sustainable, and nutritious food systems. The two organizations outlined new joint initiatives to accelerate the sustainable transformation of livestock production worldwide.

Opening the meeting, FAO Assistant Director-General Dr. Thanawat Tiensin and IFIF Chair Constance Cullman welcomed delegates representing over 80% of global feed output. They stressed that public–private cooperation remains key to achieving sustainability and food security goals. Dr. Tiensin highlighted the “vital role of the feed and livestock sector” in global sustainability efforts, guided by FAO’s vision of “better production, better nutrition, a better environment, and a better life.”

Cullman underscored IFIF’s two-decade collaboration with FAO through initiatives such as the International Feed Regulators Meeting, the Manual of Good Practices for the Feed Sector, and feed safety capacity-building programs. “Our partnership with FAO is a model for how science-based collaboration delivers real results for people, animals, and the planet,” she said.

FAO’s Daniela Battaglia praised ongoing cooperation, particularly in promoting feed safety and combating antimicrobial resistance. The meeting also reviewed major joint initiatives, including the Livestock Environmental Assessment and Performance (LEAP) Partnership and FAO’s Global Plan of Action for Sustainable Livestock Transformation.

Both organizations reaffirmed their commitment to joint action on sustainability, antimicrobial resistance, and feed safety through 2026, advancing science-driven solutions for a resilient and responsible feed industry.
