The International Summit on the Role of Meat & Livestock in Society, hosted by Colorado State University, explored the contributions of livestock to nutrition, ecology, and sustainability, building on the 2022 Dublin Declaration of Scientists. The event gathered global experts to discuss key challenges and opportunities in the sector.

The Colorado State University (CSU) Center for Meat Safety & Quality recently hosted the "International Summit on the Role of Meat & Livestock in Society" in Denver, USA. The event, supported by a U.S. Department of Agriculture grant, attracted global experts to examine the role of livestock in food security, nutrition, and environmental sustainability.

The summit covered three main areas: health and nutrition, societal considerations, and ecology and environment. Experts emphasized the importance of animal-source foods in addressing malnutrition and supporting balanced diets, particularly in low-income regions. In discussing livestock's ecological impact, participants highlighted the potential of proper management practices to promote soil health, biodiversity, and carbon sequestration, despite common criticisms of livestock farming's contribution to climate change.

Charlie Arnot, Executive Officer of the Center for Food Integrity, noted that "scientists must communicate in a very different way," stressing the importance of clear and frequent engagement with the public. The summit concluded with the announcement of a "Denver Call For Action," set for publication in Animal Frontiers in early 2025, advocating for evidence-based, culturally sensitive dietary recommendations and policies.
