21 January 20252 min reading

The European Parliament has established the Intergroup on Sustainable Livestock with the support of MEPs from various countries and political groups. Many MEPs have expressed their support for this initiative, highlighting its importance for the future of European agriculture by aiming to enhance collaboration between policymakers and the livestock sector, while contributing to sustainability, food security, and rural development.

The European Parliament has officially established the Intergroup on Sustainable Livestock. This initiative reflects a strong commitment to developing livestock farming systems that are environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable while safeguarding food safety and rural communities.

Benoit Cassart

MEP Benoit Cassart highlighted the need for such a platform: “The reality on the ground that I see every day does not correspond to what is often heard in public institutions, which are often very urban-centric, such as the European Parliament. This Intergroup can help to bridge the gap between reality on the ground and our political decision-makers.”

Alexander Bernhuber

Another key proponent, MEP Alexander Bernhuber, stated, “This Intergroup has been created to address the need for a holistic approach to sustainable livestock farming, integrating environmental, economic, and animal welfare aspects.”

European Livestock Voice, representing stakeholders across the livestock value chain, welcomed the development. They pledged to contribute actively, ensuring policymakers stay informed about advancements in animal production science and the complexities of livestock farming. The initiative is expected to foster well-informed, balanced policies for the livestock sector in Europe.

MEMBER STATES ENDORSE UPDATED CODE FOR GREEN LABELING FOR FEED

The European Commission’s SCoPAFF on Animal Nutrition has officially endorsed the upgraded Copa-Cogeca & FEFAC Code of Good Labeling Practices for compound feed. This updated code, inspired by the Green Claims Directive, provides detailed guidelines on the environmental performance of animal feed, covering key areas like climate change and livestock emissions abatement. By integrating advanced methodologies and databases, it supports the feed sector in reducing its environmental footprint while ensuring transparency for farmers and consumers.
