For years, compound feed manufacturers and livestock integrators relied on generic global averages to measure carbon footprints. A major technical update by dsm-firmenich now enables direct integration of real farm-level crop metrics into feed formulations, replacing estimation with verifiable field data across the animal protein value chain.
dsm-firmenich Animal Nutrition & Health has introduced a primary crop footprinting capability within its ISO-assured Sustell platform, shifting sustainability measurement in the animal nutrition sector from secondary estimates to field-verified data. By allowing agribusinesses to plug primary crop production metrics directly into feed formulations and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) calculations, the tool directly addresses tightening global supply chain mandates. Raw crop cultivation accounts for the majority of feed and livestock emissions; replacing industry averages with localized farm metrics drastically improves accuracy for feed compounders and integrators.

The system aligns with Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) requirements and Forests, Land and Agriculture (FLAG) reporting standards, helping animal protein producers back up sustainability claims with audit-ready evidence.
"By enabling companies to use their own production data, we turn environmental measurement from an estimation exercise into a more accurate representation of real-world performance," stated Dr. David Nickell, Global Head of Sustainability at dsm-firmenich ANH.
The Sustell platform integrates field-level crop production, feed manufacturing, and livestock processing metrics into a unified, ISO-compliant footprinting system.
