Lallemand Animal Nutrition and the Micalis Institute have launched the Biofilm1Health initiative to improve health and environmental solutions through beneficial microbial biofilms. The project embraces a holistic One Health approach, addressing animal, human, and environmental welfare.
Lallemand Animal Nutrition has partnered with the Micalis Institute to establish Biofilm1Health, a joint laboratory focused on advancing the One Health approach. This initiative seeks to enhance the beneficial properties of microbial biofilms, communities of microorganisms within a self-produced matrix. By leveraging high-throughput biofilm phenotyping and artificial intelligence, the collaboration aims to reduce chemical inputs and bolster animal welfare.

“Biofilm1Health represents a significant step forward in our understanding and application of beneficial microorganisms,” said Mathieu Castex, general manager of Lallemand Animal Nutrition. The laboratory will concentrate on selecting beneficial microbial strains, studying multi-species interactions, optimizing product formulations, and developing methods to investigate environmental biofilms in situ.
“This partnership allows us to bridge the gap between fundamental research and practical applications,” stated Romain Briandet, research director at INRAE. With a focus on real-world solutions, the initiative aspires to contribute to healthier ecosystems by combatting harmful microorganisms and enhancing the positive attributes of biofilms in animal nutrition and environmental management.
