COFCO International has completed its second shipment of deforestation and conversion-free soybeans to COFCO Oils & Oilseeds in China. This marks the company’s second such shipment this year, and it has committed to eliminating deforestation from its global soy, corn, and palm supply chains by 2025.
COFCO International has successfully completed its second shipment of deforestation- and conversion-free soybeans to COFCO Oils & Oilseeds in China. The shipment is part of the Green Value Chain Taskforce, launched by the World Economic Forum’s Tropical Forest Alliance. It also includes enhanced sustainability metrics, aiming to meet evolving environmental and social best practices.
The soybeans were grown as part of a crop rotation system on COFCO International’s sugar plantations in São Paulo state, Brazil. Crop rotation, a regenerative agricultural practice, improves soil health, boosts yields, and reduces emissions by minimizing the use of synthetic fertilizers.
The soybeans meet stringent environmental standards, including a 31 December 2020 cut-off date for deforestation and conversion. Third-party audits confirmed that they were produced in compliance with COFCO International’s Responsible Agriculture Standard, which includes sustainable farming practices like water management, biodiversity conservation, and ethical labor standards.
This transaction follows a mass balance trade system, with COFCO International also preparing for future compliance with the European Union’s Deforestation Regulation, which will require a segregated trade system. The company is committed to eliminating deforestation from its global soy, corn, and palm supply chains by 2025.
