China bans Spanish poultry imports amid avian flu concerns

China has halted imports of poultry and related products from Spain due to a recent avian influenza outbreak. Spanish authorities emphasize that the ban has had no immediate impact, as exports to China had not yet started.

China’s customs administration issued a notice on August 7 announcing a ban on poultry imports from Spain, citing the detection of avian influenza. The move affects products such as chicken, turkey, and other related poultry items.

Spain’s agriculture ministry responded, stating that “there was no effective impact from the ban because exports of poultry from Spain to China have not yet begun.” The ministry also noted that a protocol signed in April between the two countries allows for the export of certain poultry products, including turkey and chicken feet, to China. Applications from Spanish companies seeking to export under this agreement are still under review.

While the current ban has not disrupted trade flows, it highlights ongoing biosecurity concerns in global poultry markets. Avian influenza outbreaks have periodically affected trade relationships worldwide, prompting import restrictions and monitoring measures to protect domestic flocks.

The April protocol between Spain and China was part of broader efforts to expand trade in poultry products, particularly high-demand items such as chicken feet and turkey. This agreement was intended to open new markets for Spanish poultry producers, who are closely monitoring regulatory developments in China.
