As frequently mentioned based on the subject, the increase in the world population and the demand for meat are unlikely to be met by the current production capacity. On the other hand, the coronavirus pandemic has increased the already existing food safety concerns. Insects come to the fore at this point and they are seen as a potential protein source of the future. The last cover story of the year focuses on this issue.
The world's total population is estimated to reach 10 billion within the forthcoming 30 years. On the other hand, food production is expected to increase by around 70%.
These figures require the demand for animal products to double at the end of the same period. The coronavirus, which spread from China and loomed over like a nightmare on the whole world, increased food safety concerns.
In the framework of the anticipated problems, industrial insects are seen as a cost-effective way out to meet the food needs of the growing population on the one hand and the feed needs of the animals on the other, to meet quality protein deficit. Experts state that insects can both feed people and feed animals.
EU Policies and Legislations can further boost the development of this young and innovative sector.
Today, insects can be used in fish feed and pet food within the European Union. The next step will be to authorize their use for poultry feed and other livestock before widening the range of allowed insects’ substrates.
