AI solutions for grain trade take center stage in IGC-backed global challenge

Artificial intelligence is moving beyond theory and into practical grain trade applications. Winners of the Smart Global Grains Trade Challenge 2026 showcased technologies designed to improve price forecasting, trade documentation and post-harvest logistics, highlighting AI’s growing role in strengthening global food and feed supply chains.

Artificial intelligence applications with the potential to improve the efficiency and resilience of global grain trade were recognized during the Smart Global Grains Trade Challenge 2026, organized by the International Grains Council (IGC) and the India Middle East Agri Alliance (IMEAA) as part of London Grains Week 2026.

The initiative brought together start-ups, scale-ups and established companies developing digital solutions for grain trading, with more than 50 projects evaluated by a jury representing IGC, GAFTA, IGTC and IMEAA. Entries were assessed on their innovation, commercial viability, scalability and their potential contribution to food security and trade digitalization, with particular attention given to solutions that could be deployed across the Global South.

According to IGC Executive Director Arnaud Petit, global grain trade is expected to expand by around 2% annually through 2031, increasing the need for technologies that improve supply chain resilience. “This development will require innovative solutions to improve the resilience of the agri-food system,” Petit said, adding that the winning projects demonstrate “new ways of doing grains trade.”

Three companies received top awards. India’s AgPulse Analytica was recognized in the start-up category for AI-driven commodity price forecasting and market intelligence tools. Argentina-based eDox won the scale-up category for its platform that digitalizes international trade processes and documentation. France’s Javelot was selected among mature companies for its AI-powered approach to optimizing grain flows from post-harvest storage through to food industry facilities.


According to information shared by the organizers, global grain trade has grown by approximately 90% over the past 15 years, exceeding 650 million tonnes annually and involving more than 120 exporting and 250 importing ports worldwide. The challenge was supported by Microsoft AI for Good Lab, reflecting growing interest in applying AI to improve market intelligence, logistics and food security across international grain supply chains.
