Tayfun AKTUGAN, Pi Otomasyon: “Thanks to automation, the businesses have the opportunity of detecting their permanent faults, they can see the operations of optimization and improvement in the production line easily, they have the opportunity to adopt more precise usage levels for raw materials and consumables which affects the cost.”
For efficient and effective production in the age of Industry 4.0, automation is a must for a facility. Automation is important not only in terms of increasing production efficiency and quality but also in terms of tracking the history of a product. Many countries now want to be kept informed about all the phases that the products they import go through from seed to grocery store and stipulate transparency. Tracking this process requires automation as well. In Turkey, there are many companies providing service in this area. Pi Automation attracts attention among them, which has achieved important works, especially in the feed sector after its establishment in 2010. The Izmir based company offers automation and Industrial IT solutions. The firm, which has installed automation systems for the industry-leading companies such as Abalıoğlu, Keskinoglu, Matlı, and Beyza until now, provides service for system setup and reporting for feed facilities for in processes such as raw material acceptance, dosing, stockpiling, and packaging. We discussed the importance of automation for growth-oriented companies with Tayfun Aktugan, General Manager of Pi Otomasyon Kontrol ve Yazılım Limited Şirketi. Emphasizing that automation increases the profitability, Aktugan stated that the companies that went through this system left their competitors behind.
Here are the answers Tayfun Aktugan gave to our questions about automation:
Can you give us some information about your company and its areas of activity?
We, as Pi Automation, are giving service in the fields of industrial automation and information technologies. Food Production Facilities, Mineral Production Facilities, Infrastructure investments (Waste Water, Tunnels, Organized Industrial Sites, etc) and information technologies fall under our area of activity.
For businesses of particularly which scale is automation systems advantageous the most? What are the advantages of automation systems for facilities?
Henceforward, every factory -particularly the feed plants- that produce over 3000 tons monthly should invest in automation and information technologies. Automation system gives the plants that exceed this production amount an edge over all rival companies and companies that take a part in the supply chain about issues such as standardized production, quality control, optimization of the raw material purchase process, cost steps, optimization of delivery.
What can you tell us about the costs of ownership for automation systems? What is the payback period of these systems?
Costs of ownership for automation systems are not as high as it is thought to be. Besides, considering its advantages about quality control, costing, instant stock, delivery, integration of laboratory, we can say that this period varies between 6 and 14 months.
To how many plants/companies have you given service in Turkey and abroad if any?
By now, we have given service to 190 facilities of various scales locally, and 15 facilities abroad.
Until now, you have installed systems to many leading feed plants. What kind of feedback did you receive from these facilities?
We are receiving very positive feedback. The businesses have the opportunity of detecting their permanent faults, they can see the operations of optimization and improvement in the production line easily, they have the opportunity to adopt more precise usage levels for raw materials and consumables which affects the cost, and these together ramps up the profitability.
How many companies are there which provide service in your sector in Turkey? What are the qualities that make you different from your rivals?
Unfortunately, it is impossible to estimate their numbers. They are establishing a company with a laptop, however the consequences come to nothing except aggrieving customers. We, as Pi Automation, have a team of about 35. We have departments of panel mounting and testing, PLC & instrumentation and Electric work, and also Information technologies. You can see this structure also in Europe, however this is not the way of structuring that we observe from our competitors.
The businesses that make production quicker and with lower costs through state-of-the-art technology are more successful now. Do you think that the feed sector is able to achieve this digital transformation?
We can explicitly see that the businesses that have accomplished this get ahead of their rivals. We can also see that the ones that don’t make this investment are losing their share in the market and drawing back.
Do you have activities and targets towards outland?
Pi Automation has agents in Iran and in Egypt. We are carrying out direct business follow-ups in these regions. Before the civil war, we had pleasant business relationships also in Syria but we all know the current situation. Russia and North Africa are among the markets that we are interested.
